For all the self-proclaimed wordsmiths in our community, the Garland County Library is hosting its very first Adult Spelling Bee! Entry is free, and anyone age 18 or older is welcome to compete. There will be medals and prizes for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place! Registration required for competitors.
Spectators and supporters welcome and encouraged.
Our unofficial format is as follows, and it is modified to be a more casual/beginner friendly of the Scripps National Spelling Bee:
1. All spellers who have not been eliminated from the competition spell one word in each round.
2. Upon incorrectly spelling a word, the speller is eliminated.
3. End-of-Bee Procedure: If all spellers in a round misspell, all remain in the competition and a new round begins with
the spellers spelling in their original order. If only one speller spells correctly in a round, a new one-word round begins and the
speller is given an opportunity to spell the next word on the list (anticipated winning word). If the speller correctly spells the
anticipated winning word in this one-word round, the speller is declared the champion. If the speller misspells the anticipated
winning word in a one-word round, a new round begins with all the spellers who spelled correctly and incorrectly in the previous
round: These spellers spell in their original order.
-Each speller is allowed 1 minute at the microphone per word. Time begins when the pronouncer first pronounces the word.
-The judges respond only to the speller’s requests for repetition of the word’s
pronunciation, a definition, a sentence, and part of speech which the speller can request at any point within their time limit before attempting to spell.
-A word must be repeated, spelled, and repeated again by the speller to submit the word.
-The judges listen carefully, determine whether or not words are spelled correctly, and uphold the rules. The decisions of the
judges are final.
-The speller is responsible for ANY misunderstanding of the word.
